Stipes’ in Over his head.
Stipe Miocic (15-2-0) defends his title for the first time this Saturday at UFC 203 in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. The proud Croatian faces the task of taking on Alistair
Overeem (41-14-0) in his first title defense.
Stipe is currently on a three fight roll with first round knockouts over former UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabricio Werdum and Andre Arlovski, both men rushed in and Miocic made them pay the price by landing a right hand to put them on their backs. He beat down Mark Hunt back in 2015 in Australia by strategically sticking to his game plan of going in early using his wrestling to take Hunt down and wear him out. If Mark Hunt wasn’t such a though motherfucker the fight could of ended in the second as Miocic landed some bombs both on the ground and standing.
Miocics last loss came by way of decision after a five round brawl with Junior Dos Santos. Stipe easily won the first two rounds but got pulled into Juniors game in the third and the fight ended up being basically a MMA boxing match with Dos Santos coming out on top.
Overeem with one loss less than Miocic has wins- also has another forty one wins under his belt and is by far the more experienced fighter. He has won four fights in a row, two of which Stipe will know only too well having giving him his only two losses. Overeem did what Miocic failed to do and stopped Junior Dos Santos knocking him out in round two. He also stopped Stefan Struve who knocked out Miocic in the second round back in 2012.
Overeem has nineteen wins by submission which may make Miocic cautious of using his wrestling. Both fighters are well able to handle themselves on their feet with Overeem been a decorated kickboxer and Miocic a golden gloves champion. We could well be in for an exciting stand up fight going into the latter rounds or it could all come to an end within the blink of an eye with both fighters having a combined twenty nine knockouts between them.
My prediction is both men will come out cautious at the start with Stipe been the initial aggressor but Overeem will keep him at bay with leg kicks. I can see Stipe getting frustrated in the third round and getting tagged then shooting in for a take down. Overeem will stuff the take down and capitalize by landing short elbows taking Stipe to the ground and finishing him with a submission.
